Rocklin Electrical Work, From Sunset Whitney to Whitney Ranch

Rocklin homes are on PG&E, so service upgrades and solar interconnection run through PG&E, not SMUD or Roseville Electric. Most addresses permit through the City of Rocklin Building Division; a Rocklin mailing address outside city limits goes through Placer County, and we confirm which before we schedule. I hired Under the Sun Solar and Electric to upgrade my subpanel per the new California code. It was a quick and easy process. They were very easy to communicate with throughout, from the scheduling the install, passing inspection, to the documentation they could provide so that I could send it off to my HOA. The install was very quick and neat, and they made sure to leave everything spotless after themselves.

I'd highly recommend Under The Sun for your solar needs. I recently had 10 additional panels added to boost the production of my existing system. Mark and Paul were very responsive and easy to work with. They also worked with me to ensure a clean installation making sure no ugly conduit was exposed and completed the entire install process in a single day. It’s rare to find contractors that are this professional and prompt.

    Rocklin homes by era

    Historic Rocklin and Sunset Whitney

Rocklin started as a railroad and granite quarry town, and the blocks near the old downtown hold some of its oldest houses. Sunset Whitney, the neighborhood built around the golf course in the late 1950s and early 1960s, came next. Houses from that period often still have 60- or 100-amp service, and some carry Zinsco or Federal Pacific panels, which we recommend replacing no matter what the amperage says. We open the panel, check grounding, and run a load calculation before we suggest an upgrade. Our 100 amp vs 200 amp panel guide lays out how that decision gets made. When the wiring itself is worn out, the whole-house rewiring cost post covers what a rewire involves.

    Stanford Ranch

Stanford Ranch was developed as a master-planned community starting in the 1980s. A house that age often still has the panel it was built with, sized long before a Level 2 charger was a normal garage item. Spare breaker space is usually the sticking point on an EV charger installation here. Some homes can take a load-managed EV circuit on the existing service. Others need a service upgrade, and the load calculation is what decides it.

Whitney Ranch and the newest builds

The City Council approved Whitney Ranch in 2004, and it is one of Rocklin’s newer master-planned areas. These homes have newer panels and wiring, so most requests are additions: a charger circuit, a battery next to existing solar, landscape lighting, or a subpanel for a backyard project. Homes permitted from 2020 on generally had to include rooftop solar under the state energy code, so a battery tie-in is a common ask. We still confirm the main breaker size before promising a charger will fit, because some builder panels leave little room.

    Permits and PG&E in Rocklin

The City of Rocklin requires a permit for an electrical service upgrade, and the city has typically handled it as an over-the-counter permit when a plan checker is available. Some jobs also need the city’s electric load worksheet. EV chargers have their own city requirements sheet, and licensed contractors can submit residential solar through SolarAPP+, the automated plan review the city accepts. Addresses outside city limits go through Placer County instead. PG&E has to disconnect the service before a panel swap and reconnect it after inspection, so we request that date as soon as the permit is issued.

    Repairs, outlets, and lighting

Plenty of Rocklin calls have nothing to do with the panel. A GFCI that will not reset after a storm, a dead bedroom outlet, flickering fixtures, or recessed lights for a kitchen remodel are regular work for us. When the cause is not obvious, our electrical troubleshooting visit tests the circuit before any part gets replaced. Swapping a device in kind is usually simple. Adding a circuit usually means a permit.

    Booking a Rocklin visit

Tell us what the house is doing and the nearest cross street. A breaker that trips every time the dryer runs gets a different visit than a charger quote. Weekday appointments run 8 AM to 6 PM, and Saturday runs 9 AM to 4 PM. Our service areas page shows the rest of the map.

PG&E. Rocklin is outside both SMUD and Roseville Electric territory, so PG&E handles disconnects, meter changes, and solar interconnection. If you live close to the Roseville line, send us the address and we will confirm before the visit.

Yes. The City of Rocklin requires a permit for an electrical service upgrade, typically issued over the counter when a plan checker is available. New circuits and EV chargers need permits too. Addresses outside city limits go through Placer County. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.

Not automatically. We look at the brand, the condition of the bus and breakers, and what you plan to add. Zinsco and Federal Pacific panels we recommend replacing. A sound panel with open spaces can often stay put.

Often, yes. Newer Rocklin homes usually have more capacity than the older neighborhoods, but builder panels can be tight on breaker space. A load calculation shows whether a standard circuit, a load-managed charger, or a service upgrade fits.

Weekdays 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Saturday hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and we are closed Sunday. Call or text 916-899-3062.
